Day 34: The Advocate

Word:

John 14.26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Daily Devotional:

So far in our 40 Days of Devotion, we have seen that time in the Word, worship and prayer are essential building blocks of a life-giving devotional life. Our next building block is listening. We want to take regular time to be still and to listen. The Holy Spirit is our advocate, counselor, helper, intercessor, strengthener, teacher, reminder, and guide. As we read, worship, pray and listen, we start our day by receiving His ministry to us and preparing our hearts to walk with Him throughout the day.

Scriptures For Today:

As you read today's Scriptures, read slowly and attentively, allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to you as you meditate on His Word.

John 14.26 (AMP) But the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will help you remember everything that I have told you.

Psalm 32.8-9 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you. Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you.

John 16.12-15 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

John 10.2-4 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.

Worship:

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, thank You for Your presence and ministry in my life. Help me to be still and to listen to You as I start my day and throughout the day today. I love You!

Listen & Obey:

Spend two minutes in silent, listening prayer. Write down what you sense the Holy Spirit speaking to you. Here are some prompts to assist you:

  • Lord, what do You want to speak to me from these passages of Scripture as I start my day?

  • How do You want me to apply this truth today?

  • Who do I need to share this with today?
