Day 35: Be Still

Word:

Psalm 46.10 Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.

Daily Devotional:

When we take time to listen, we choose to quiet our soul and be still before the Lord. The Scriptures teach us that God speaks many ways (Hebrews 1.1). One of those ways that we see often in Scripture, is that He speaks in the midst of silence and stillness. He spoke to Moses in the wilderness, David on the lonely hills of Bethlehem while he was tending sheep and to Elijah in the silence of the mountain cave. When we take time to be still before the Lord, we position ourselves to hear His voice.

Scriptures For Today:

As you read today's Scriptures, read slowly and attentively, allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to you as you meditate on His Word.

Psalm 46.10 Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.

Isaiah 30.15 This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: 'In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength…’

1 Kings 19.11-13 He said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.’ Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then there came a voice to him that said, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’

Psalm 131.1-3 O Lord, my heart is not lifted up, my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvellous for me. But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; my soul is like the weaned child that is with me. O Israel, hope in the Lord from this time on and for evermore.

Worship:

Prayer:

Lord, I sit in silence before you today and know that You are God. You will be exalted among the nations. Here in the quiet I listen for Your voice to speak to me.

Listen & Obey:

Spend two minutes in silent, listening prayer. Write down what you sense the Holy Spirit speaking to you. Here are some prompts to assist you:

  • Lord, what do You want to speak to me from these passages of Scripture as I start my day?

  • How do You want me to apply this truth today?

  • Who do I need to share this with today?
