Day 8: Discipleship is a Journey

Vision for this Week’s Devotionals:

As a church family, we value Life on Life Discipleship- intentional relationships that are focused on growing as lifelong, obedient followers of Jesus who in turn help others to do the same. Each week during 40 Days of Discipleship, the devotionals will zoom in on different aspects of life on life discipleship. Last week we focused on a disciple as an obedient follower of Jesus, with our foundations in Him. This week we are focusing on discipleship as a lifelong journey of growth.

Word:

Discipleship to Jesus is a pilgrimage of spiritual development. One of the most frequent ways the writers of Scripture describe spiritual growth is with word pictures from human biological growth: infants, little children, children, young men, fathers, and the mature.

Scriptures For Today:

As you read today's Scriptures, read slowly and attentively, allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to you as you meditate on His Word.

1 John 2.12-14 I am writing to you, little children, because your sins have been forgiven you for His name's sake. I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I have written to you, children, because you know the Father. I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.

Colossians 1.28 He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ.

2 Peter 1.5-11 5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.  Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Worship:

Prayer:

Jesus, thank You that You want me to grow and You are leading me to be mature in You. Would you give me grace today to grow as Your disciple!

Listen & Obey:

Spend two minutes in silent, listening prayer. Write down what you sense the Holy Spirit speaking to you.

Here are some prompts to assist you:

Lord, what do You want to speak to me from these passages of Scripture as I start my day?

How do You want me to apply this truth today?

Who do I need to share this with today?
